A Path to the Past - Inca Trail, Peru

Hidden high in the Andes mountains of Peru lies the Inca Trail, a captivating hiking route that weaves its way from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu, the “Lost City of the Incas.” Stretching over 26 miles, this ancient trail was once used by the Inca civilization, and today, it stands as a testament to their architectural prowess and understanding of nature.

There's a reason why the Inca Trail consistently ranks as one of the most beautiful hikes in the world. The path offers an intoxicating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. As you trek, you traverse diverse terrain, including cloud forests teeming with biodiversity, rugged mountain passes, and subtropical jungles. Additionally, you'll encounter fascinating Incan ruins along the way, culminating in the iconic Sun Gate view of Machu Picchu at sunrise, a sight that's truly one of the world's great travel experiences.

The best time to hike the Inca Trail is during the dry season, between May and September. During this period, you're less likely to encounter rain, and the paths are generally in better condition. The trail is closed in February for maintenance and to allow the trail to recover.

Permits are required to hike the Inca Trail and are limited to 500 per day (including guides and porters), so it's essential to book several months in advance, especially during the peak season. Most hikers complete the trail in four days and three nights, although longer treks that include additional Inca sites are also available. Remember, the trek can be physically demanding due to the high altitude and strenuous climbs, so ensuring you are well-prepared and acclimatized to the altitude is crucial for a safe and enjoyable journey. And don't forget to respect the environment and cultural sites along the way to help preserve this magnificent trail for future generations to enjoy.

Nestled within the natural beauty of Hawaii's Kauai island, the Kalalau Trail is an 11-mile trek that invites hikers to traverse some of the most magnificent landscapes imaginable. Running along the island's rugged Na Pali Coast, this trail takes you through lush valleys, cascading waterfalls, and offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.

The Kalalau Trail is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world. It winds its way through five lush valleys, across towering sea cliffs, and ends at the secluded Kalalau Beach, where you can bask in the serenity of one of Hawaii's most beautiful and remote sandy shores. The views of the rugged coastline and deep, turquoise ocean are simply stunning. The trail is also home to many unique plant species and offers opportunities for sighting native birds, making it a paradise for nature lovers.

While Hawaii has a relatively stable climate year-round, the best times to hike the Kalalau Trail are generally between April to June and September to November. These periods offer slightly cooler weather and a lower chance of heavy rainfall, making the trail more enjoyable and safer to navigate.

Hiking the full length of the Kalalau Trail is a challenging endeavor that typically takes two days, with a camping night at the beach. A permit is required for any hikers planning to go beyond the first two miles of the trail or those planning to camp overnight. It's important to note that parts of the trail can be quite strenuous and sometimes dangerous due to uneven terrain, narrow paths, and occasional landslides. Always check the trail conditions before you start your hike, carry enough water and supplies, and let someone know your plans. Despite the challenges, reaching the end of the trail and witnessing the pristine beauty of Kalalau Beach makes it all worth it.

Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, towers above the savannah plains of Tanzania at an astonishing height of 5,895 meters. Known as the 'Roof of Africa,' this dormant volcano offers various routes that lead hikers through diverse ecosystems, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts and the icy summit.

Scaling Kilimanjaro is one of the most beautiful hikes on the planet, a journey that unfolds a striking diversity of landscapes. The trek begins in the thick montane forests, home to monkeys and vibrant bird species, then transitions into heath and moorland with giant lobelias and groundsels. Further up, the terrain morphs into the lunar-like alpine desert and, finally, the snowy, glacier-capped summit. Upon reaching the top, hikers are rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise over the African continent and panoramic views that stretch as far as the Serengeti.

The best times to climb Kilimanjaro are during the mountain's two dry seasons: January to March and June to October. Of these, January to March is generally colder but less crowded. These periods offer the clearest conditions and lowest probability of precipitation, making the trek more pleasant and safe.

Most climbers take between 5 to 9 days to ascend and descend Kilimanjaro, depending on the chosen route. Acclimatization days are built into longer itineraries to cope with the high altitude. No technical skills are required to climb Kilimanjaro, but physical fitness is essential as the trek is strenuous, especially the final push to the summit. Accommodation is in mountain huts or tents, and meals are usually provided by the trekking support crew. Essential gear includes warm clothing, sun protection, and hydration supplies. As the summit day starts at midnight to reach the top for sunrise, a headlamp is a must. Altitude sickness can be a concern, and climbers should familiarize themselves with its symptoms. With adequate preparation and determination, reaching the 'Roof of Africa' is a dream that many trekkers turn into a reality, making Kilimanjaro one of the most beautiful treks in the world.
